Eureka Solo Backcountry 1 Tent Reviews

eureka-solo-smallI do a couple of bicycle touring trips per year. I wanted a lightweight solo tent that would be easy to carry on the bike, accomodate my 6′ 3″ height and also be easy to put up and take down. I tried the Eureka Solitaire and found it to be a little too confining for me. Also tried a Wenzel Starlite bivy tent that was a little smaller than I’d like. I think the Backcountry 1 is just the right combination of size and weight for carrying on a bike or backpacking. I have used it three times now and am very happy with it.

Bought this tent for use on a cold weather camping trip at the tail end of winter. Wanted something good; had been dissatisfied with cheaper ones at the discount stores – especially when it plainly said on the box “this tent is not waterproof.” No such problem with Eureka, in fact the important seams on the Eureka are factory taped and it’s very waterproof. It’s a tent that I would take with confidence deep into the backcountry.

Had also wanted something light and sturdy enough for backpacking. Again, dissatisfied with cheap dome tents weighing over 7 pounds; this one is not much more than 3 pounds, being a “half” dome, and is very well constructed. The size is OK for one person; especially easy to get into with the wide side door. The poles and fly worked fine and set up quickly and easily by one person. The fly seems to be necessary for cold weather camping, otherwise there would be too much air flow; with the fly on it feels snug inside. Of course that air flow would be great for warm weather. The short pole for the fly was a bit tight – needed to “bow” it to get it to fit into its slots; may want to use a tube cutter to shorten it 1/4 inch or so.

I like the color; it blends in nice with the woods. For backpacking, will probably replace the steel stakes with something lighter. Then again, I have yet to stake it out. It’s totally free-standing, and even in the wind just a few guy lines kept it in place.

Set the Spitfire up quickly and easily with post and grommet corner attachments and clips to attach the tent body to the frame. Kelty Trail Dome 4 Four Person Tent

kelty-trail-domeIn the early 1950′s, Dick Kelty made backpacks for his friends in the Sierra Club. Time and experience proved that hiking was more pleasurable when the hiker could carry heavy loads without shoulder pain. This was accomplished with Kelty’s ideas of a hipbelt and light weight aluminum frames. A few of Kelty’s popular items are backpacks, adjustable poles, rain covers for backpacks, camp pillows, fanny packs, a carport tent or shelter, Thermolite Quallo sleeping bags, and chuckwagon dog packs. An ideal family-camping tent that offers a view of the stars at the campground or in the backcountry, the Kelty Trail Dome 4 features a simple pole design and clip-sleeve construction that make it a snap to pitch. Offering spacious room for four, the Trail Dome 4 has a 55 square foot floor area (but does not include a storage vestibule). It features internal storage pockets, mesh ceiling, gear loft loops, side-release buckle tent-fly connection, noiseless zipper pulls that resist jingling when it’s windy, and color-coded clip construction with DAC DA17 aluminum poles.

The Kelty Trail Dome 4 four-person, three-season tent. The DA17 pre-bent poles are made of proprietary aluminum alloy designed by DAC specifically for tents, which provides a large diameter pole with high stiffness, strength and durability at an affordable price. The clip construction provides great fly separation and increased air movement, and it makes it easier to set-up your tent but offers less strength than full-length sleeves. The clips connecting the poles to the tent are color-coded so set-up is easy and quick in low light conditions. The Water Tight Wall (WTW) construction keeps the doors and windows from leaking, even in driving rain. All exposed walls are constructed of coated fabrics with the seams shingled downward to shed water. Exposed windows and doors have

  • Three-season, four-person tent is ideal for camping trips with family and friends

  • Freestanding design with color-coded clip construction

  • Mesh side vents and a mesh ceiling for great ventilation

  • Watertight walls will keep your tent dry

  • Guy points for added stability in windy conditions and noiseless zipper pulls

Kelty Trail Dome 4 Four Person Tent Reviews

Price: 9.99 at local Sports Authority

Weather Conditions: Cloudy, with sunbreaks. 2 days car camping.

Weight: Fairly light. 8 lbs.

kelty-trail-dome-smallSet-Up: The strength and durability of the aluminum poles are definetly worth the investment. You don’t have to worry about snapping the poles unlike the fiberglass poles. I recommend putting the poles in the base “fastex” clips first, and then attaching the plastic clips on second. It’s not really clear in the instructions. If you just bought this tent, I recommend practicing pitching the tent a few times. The first run took almost 30 minutes. I was able to set up this tent in under 10 minutes by myself. Always, always use a footprint or tarp when camping to save you from damaging the tent floor and moisture from the ground. Be sure to sweep your area of pine cones and small rocks. I also recommend getting beefier stakes. I’ve read the MSR Groundhog stakes are nice, but I got some plastic ones at Walmart for a set of 6.

Tent fly: I like how the tent fly “clips” into the fastex clips at each corner. Also, I’ve read complaints of how the tent fly doesn’t provide a good awning if you decide to step out during the rain. Pay attention to the color coded straps that will tell you how the tent fly is installed.

Front opening: The zipper of the opening is overstretched near the top. I was nervous that the zipper couldn’t handle the stress of the two poles stretching it. I had to use a fastex clip with a strap (similar to the cross strap on a backpack) to wrap around the poles and pull them together to relieve the stress on the zipper. That solved the problem.

Storage compartments inside the tent: There are 4 mesh pockets at each corner of the tent. But they’re aren’t any hooks near the top of the tents if you wanted to hook a lantern to the roof.

Inside Space: I’m 5’7″ and I was able to stand up completely with my head crouched a little bit. This is truly a 2 person camp with gear. I was able to fit a queen size air mat with no problems. The zipper wasn’t as quiet as I hoped it to be. It still sounded like a zipper being pulled. The zipper was very smooth once I adjusted the two poles with the plastic strap. I didn’t see any condensation the next morning, so I guess the tent vents very well.

Suggestions for design: This would be a perfect tent if it had a vestibule to store dirty clothes, boots, etc. A 2nd door would be nice, too.

Overall, I think I’ll upgrade the the Kelty Gunnison 4.1 since it has a vestibule and a 2nd door. This is a nice tent for the camper on a budget.

kelty-trail-dome-smallKelty makes great tents. They are well-made and go from box to fully setup in a matter of a few minutes. Very easy to set up!!!! We got this tent for two people and it works great with our queen airbed mattress. There is enough room for another person inside but not another mattress. The queen mattress touches 3 walls with a nice space left to store gear and clothing bags. We used it this past weekend and it was perfect. The tent is very lightweight and even though we were car-camping, it would be possible to carry this tent in a backpack.Don’t get this tent if you have a family with kids, etc. Get a bigger tent, but I would recommend you get a Kelty! They are worth the extra $$.

Kelty Teton 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season Reviews

kelty-teton-smallI just returned from a 6-day/5-night camping trip and this is the tent I used. I did quite a bit of research before making my purchase and these were the requirements of what I was looking for in a tent:

1.) reasonably priced2.) well made (duh–but you know what I’m talking about…something that doesn’t rival one of those CHEAP 30-dollar wannabe-tents from Target and other places)

3.) easily assembled by one person–and quickly

4.) small and light

5.) could manage under high winds and torrential downpours.

Well, after whittling down my list of possible tents, this is the one that remained. Here’s why I’m happy with my choice:

-At 0 (understandably, a steep price for some), for those that know that a cheap tent is nearly as bad as no tent at all, this was definitely a price that was reasonable.

-Many seams on the tent and rainfly had a pretty nice factory seal and the stitching seems tight and strong. The tent has excellent ventilation with much of the tent comprised of the fine, breathable mesh allowing air to easily come in and out.

-Excellent design for one man assembly. There are no annoying sleeves to slide the two press-fit poles through; they simply and sturdily attach to clips lining down to the four corners of the tent. I was able to set everything up within 5 minutes.

kelty-teton-small-While this can be used for two people, it would be cramped (31-sqft). It is perfect for one person and the extra gear (The previous reviewer’s comment on the paltry vestibule was spot-on). The tent barely weighs over 4 lbs. which is outstanding!! In fact, on my final day right before tear-down, when I picked up the entire assembled tent to carry to another spot so it could dry in the sunlight, I was amazed at how virtually weightless it seemed to be.

-Two of the days and nights were clear with lots of sun of stars. The others were filled with a windy lightning storm–a slow, long and perpetually annoying drizzle–and a few unrelenting downpours. The tent held up extremely well allowing only a small amount of water in at the corners…which was entirely my fault (See below).

I’m very pleased with this purchase. For the purposes of my trip, viz., solo, weeklong camping–where weight, quality, and price were the major concerns–if there is a better tent out there, its existence must have snuck past me. I’m planning an anniversary backpacking trip for next spring for me and the wife, so a new tent will be necessary (for which price will become less of a factor and where ultimate quality will be of paramount importance); however, for everything else involving just me, this will definitely be my tent of choice.

A few suggestions if purchasing the Teton 2. I would strongly advise purchasing the special Kelty Teton 2 footprint along with the tent. While may seem like a very expensive accessory (maybe this is why the previous reviewer opted not to purchase it), it was a tremendous improvement on other materials I’ve used in the past under previous tents. It will protect your tent floor against minor damage as well as keeping it dry–and because it is specially made for this tent, it is extremely light (easily packs with the rest of the tent) and you never see it when the tent is set up (as opposed to using annoying and heavy tarps). Finally, a word on seam sealing. While all of the seams on the rainfly are adequately sealed and a few on the actual tent, the seam connecting the floor to the rest of the tent MUST BE SEALED!! I recommend using Seam Grip made by McNett (others more experienced than me have spoken of simply using silicone mixed with mineral spirits)…but the one thing I ignorantly failed to do was completely seal the vertical seams of the four corners–which led to a little water seeping in at the corners during heavy rain. If one seals the tent properly, however, the first time, the tent should keep all water out.

kelty-teton-smallI recently went on a 6 day pack and paddle in my home state of Indiana, well known for it’s humidity and wicked thunderstorms. Before I went I had decided to upgrade my tent. The one that I chose was the Teton 2 by Kelty.

On the third day of my trip the weather turned very ugly letting loose with a storm that knocked down more than a few healthy trees near my campsite. At first I was pretty concerned but my fears were unfounded. Kelty’s Teton 2 withstood a storm that would have torn other tents to peices. the only complaints I have are.

1-this is very small for a two person tent.

2-the vestibule was large enough for my boots only so I had to store my gear inside

3- I had some moderate condensation issuses that probably will be fixed with the use of a better ground cloth. ( I opted to use my own instead of buying the matching footprint.)

Overall this is one tough little tent worth every penny and more.

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 Ultra Light Tent: 1-Person 3-Season

big-agnesThe Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 Ultra Light Tent uses SilNylon fabric and DAC aluminum poles to bring weight down to a scant 2lb 3oz. And thats for a double-wall tent, not some trimmed-of-all-features single-wall thing. In addition to 22sq feet of internal space, this Big Agnes tent also gives you a large vestibule. Additional guy-out points on the fly provide more support when the wind really picks up and youd rather just sleep instead of worrying about your tent turning into a kite.

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 Ultra Light Tent: 1-Person 3-Season Reviews

big-agnes-smallI’m an outfitter in MT and have spent many nights in the wilderness. Needed to find a new solo tent for the high country. Used this tent one night and that was enough. Super light weight and extremely thin but seemingly tough enough material. Seems and stitching seem sound. Other than that I found it to be a poor design. Had a storm blow in and drop the snow level to my elevation and it rained, sleeted and blew all night. Temps about 35 degrees F.

It is not free standing and I found it impossible, either setting it up at home in good weather or especially after 8 miles and 4000 or so vertical feet in the cold, to guy wire it out correctly. Even with all the stakes.

Though the specs read that it should be able to fit the Big Agnes Park long series bags, it does not. There is no way to fit one and not have your feet rub against the lower end, which inevitably led to the lower end of my bag picking up a lot of moisture from the walls. I find it hard to believe that any normal sized human in any bag could not end up rubbing the walls. This thing is REAL small inside. I’m 6’1″ and 225 lbs. Forget about sitting up.

Cold air also blows in on your head as there is no wall by your head, just mesh. Then every time you need get in and out of the fly water pours in all over your head as there is no way to open it up without that occurring because of the angle of the tiny vestibule. No way I was fitting my Gregory Baltoro 70 Lg, 4638 cu/inches in it either. Just enough room for shoes and maybe a very small pack and water bottle.

I like Big Agnes products, but this one missed the boat. I’ll be getting a Copper Spur UL2 instead. Same material but big enough not to rub against. And room to store my pack. I’m willing to give up a bit of weight for comfort. The Fly Creek is maybe a fair weather small person no rain tent at best.

Hillerberg Atko

In respect of what tent to take, the smaller and lighter the better. However you will need something that can stand up to windy and wet conditions.
The Hilleberg Akto is one such tent.

While somewhat heavier than a bivy bag, the Hilleberg Akto offers significantly more space, and its vestibule will easily hold all your gear. Yet it still stuffs down to a package that easily fits into a pack’s side pocket, and its single-pole, tunnel design sheds wind, snow and rain with nary a problem.

Pitching the Akto is simplicity itself. Insert the pole into the pole sleeve, place the end into the pole tensioner, then peg the corners and the guy lines on each end, and, voila: instant shelter! Fiberglass rods in the corners of the outer tent provide extra height, eliminating the claustrophobia that many solo tents cause. In windier conditions, the side guy lines ensure stability.

The tent weighs only 1.3kg and has a double wall and is 87inches long by 36 inches wide. The single pole makes it easy to carry and erect. The tent is made of Kerlon 1200 fabric and has adjustable vents at both ends of the tent.
Prices start at $520.

The proper boots are going to be the difference between a great trip and a nightmare one. In older times, the boot would be made of leather. However with the invention of so many synthetic materials, this isn’t always the case.

Getting a good night’s sleep whatever the temperature to recharge your batteries for the next day’s trekking is critical and a good sleeping bag will make a massive difference to your mental and physical state.

Trekking Insurance

Of course whilst safety and enjoyment are the most important parts of any trip, you would be unwise not to take out some form of trekking insurance and in a lot of cases this is compulsory.

You should make sure that any insurance you take, include all your expensive gear, medical expenses, including helicopter rescue, search and rescue and repatriation.

There are a number of travel insurers, who specialise in backpacker insurance and are able to tailor a package to your specific needs. There are a number of good sites like that’s insurance who explain the types of cover in more detail and you should familiarize yourself with the salient points before getting quotes.
